Debbie's bold show of support for Ark

She loves her hair – but Debbie Le Besque is gearing up to lose her precious locks in a bold show of support for Ark Cancer Centre Charity.

Literally going for a bald new look was a big decision for mother-of-four Debbie to take. However, she wanted to make a difference to Ark’s £5million appeal that will help to fund a new NHS cancer treatment centre – and she is well on her way to hitting her £1,500 target.

Saturday, December 1 is D-day for Debbie, from Boyneswood Road, Medstead, and the 41-year-old, who works at NFU Mutual, in Basingstoke, is now bracing herself for the big shave.

Debbie said: “Although I have fairly short hair, anyone who knows me well will know that I have had an obsession with my hair for years – it’s always been my security blanket. As soon as I’m down or need a pick-me-up, I have my hair cut, styled or coloured and it makes me feel great again, so having it all cut off is a big deal for me.

“However, if I was seriously ill, I wouldn’t have the choice to lose my hair, and having lost my father and friends to cancer, I feel that my hair should not really matter to me as much as it does.”

Debbie added: “I am both petrified and excited about losing my hair on December 1, but I am determined to raise as much money as I possibly can for such an important and local good cause. I’m hoping that my nearest and dearest appreciate that this is the hardest thing I could think of to do, and I am grateful to everyone who sponsors and supports me.”

Debbie is raising money through her fundraising page on JustGiving, and anyone who wants to donate can go to https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/debbielebesque

Mark Jones, director of fundraising and communications for Ark Cancer Centre Charity, said: “Thank you so much to Debbie for this significant show of support. It is very much appreciated, and hopefully Debbie will receive the well-deserved sponsorship support she needs to get her to her £1,500 fundraising target.”

Ark’s £5m appeal will ensure a range of support services and complementary therapies are available alongside chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments in a calm and uplifting environment.

The new centre, which will largely be funded by Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, will be built on the Basingstoke hospital site.
