Male Voice Choirs are on song for Ark

A show of musical man power and generosity resulted in a wonderful concert and a fundraising boost for Ark Cancer Centre Charity.

Basingstoke Hospital Male Voice Choir (BHMVC) and Hart Male Voice Choir joined forces and were on song for Ark Cancer Centre Charity.

All Saints’ Church, in Southern Road, Basingstoke, was the venue for the charity concert on the evening of Wednesday, November 15 – and the generous donations from everyone who came along to enjoy the free event resulted in £769 being raised for the good cause.

The concert was the latest in a series of musical events that BHMVC have been involved in as part of the choir’s long-running support for the charity, which is raising £5million towards a unique local cancer treatment centre.

It is the first time that the two renowned male voice choirs have performed together to support Ark, and the appreciative audience were treated to a musical feast. The rafters were definitely well and truly raised when both choirs – featuring 70 singers – teamed up for several joint numbers.

Each choir performed their own sections of music – BHMVC under the leadership of musical director Dai Ogborn, and Hart under their musical director Kevin Jacot, who also played two lovely violin solos.

Dai and Kevin shared the conducting duties for the joint choir performances, and there was also a welcome guest appearance by Margaret Brackenborough, recently retired Hart musical director, who conducted the choirs on ‘The Water is Wide’.

The packed church was treated to a varied repertoire in the two-hour concert – one that gave both choirs the opportunity to display their vocal versatility.

Mark Jones, director of fundraising and communications at Ark Cancer Centre Charity, thanked both choirs for their wonderful support, and also gave the audience an update on the progress of the charity’s fundraising appeal, which has now topped £1.6m.

Mark said: “Ark is grateful to everyone who was involved in organising this splendid and memorable concert. The vocal power and great performance of the male voice choirs, individually and collectively, was a joy to listen to.

“The charity is also grateful to everyone who came along and gave generously, resulting in a fabulous fundraising result for Ark.”
