A mile of burpees!

Personal trainer Matt Smart has every right to enjoy putting his feet up at Christmas after taking on a gruelling physical feat to help Ark Cancer Centre Charity.

Matt, 39, who runs Smart Health & Fitness, did a mile of burpees on Sunday, December 20 a challenge that saw him complete 767 burpees and cover the mile-long course in one hour and four minutes.

Matt, who has a purpose-built health and fitness studio in Basingstoke, put himself through the demanding challenge to pull in the pounds to boost the charity's £5million appeal which is helping to fund a new unique local cancer centre.

The fundraising feat saw Matt make his way from The Hilton Basingstoke hotel into the town centre and up to Festival Place. He was supported on the route by several of his clients. Matt said: “Anyone who has done a burpee will know that it is a physically demanding form of exercise.“I felt a bit sore and tired the following day, but I am delighted to have completed the challenge and to have done it in such a good time. I am grateful to everyone who has sponsored me or gave donations to the volunteers collecting on the day.”

Matt, who provides personal training services in Basingstoke and surrounding areas of Hampshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Sussex, smashed his £500 target. The funds are still coming in, and the total has now broken the £1,000 mark.

Ark Cancer Centre Charity trustee Merv Rees said: “This is not the first time that Matt has put himself through a demanding physical test to help Ark Cancer Centre Charity, and once again, he has risen to the challenge in spectacular style.”
